Walkthrough

If you need basic information head over to the Game Information page or if you need tactics or strategy, head over to the Strategy Guide. I suggest you read both thouroughly to get to know the game before diving right in. Now on with the show...

This is the great walkthrough. It is highly comprehensive and contains a vast amount of information. It includes not only a walkthrough but a glossary and quick reference section at the end of the guide including a Pokedex, abilities, and items list. When complete this guide will be broken into seperate pages to be more pleasant to the viewer (you've seen those pages with the massed information, all that info on one page can be overwhelming). You have permission to reproduce and distribute this walkthrough and the reference section, but please give credit to the author (this stuff doesn't take 5 minutes to whip out you know). Pass along this site URL to a friend. NOTE: this guide assume you chose certain Pokemon for example in the beginning it assumes you chose Bulbasaur. It will always notify you and the Pokemon it choses between are equaly good for your fighting team. NOTE: Important information is blue, bold, and italicized to catch your attention.

      • The rating is a recommendation to include that Pokemon in your fighting team (see above)
      • The evolution track is under the rating. The first evolution form is in black, second in red, and third in yellow. How the Pokemon attains this evolution is in brackets by the evolved Pokemon name. If it is a number it is the skill level required to evolve. There are other Pokemon which require a special type of stone (see Strategy Guide) or have to be traded to a friend in order to evolve. The brackets will note this with [type Stone] or [Trade].

      PALLET TOWN
You begin your adventure in your house. You should now explore Pallet Town a bit. You should've found a patch of grass leading out of Pallet Town, stepping in this triggers Prof. Oak. He comes and informs you about Pokemon and grassy areas, etc... He will take you to his lab and give a choice of a Squirtle, Charmander, or Bulbasaur (this guide will assume you chose Bulbasaur). Your rival, Gary (Prof. Oak's punk of a grandson), will also have the pick of the litter. After you have chosen your Pokemon of course. He will pick the Pokemon that has an advantage over your type. You will then battle. It is recommended since Gary has the advantage, that you stick to tackling or scratching his Pokemon rather than ability decreasing attacks. Hopefully you defeated him and your Pokemon grew to level 6. You must now head on to Viridian City

      VIRIDIAN CITY
When you enter Viridian City you should explore a bit (as you would every area you enter). Do not let your curiosity control you (this is relevant throughout the game). Keep it in check as you could wander astray into an area that you're not ready for, or you may get lost in. There is a grumpy man blocking the path to the Viridian Forest, he will move once you've completed a task. You must go into the Pokemart and get Prof. Oak's package and deliver it to him back at Pallet Town. Once there, he will accept the package and you and Gary both will recieve a Pokedex (Pokemon Index, Oak will explain). Gary will then retrieve a map from his sister and "smell you later". You can also get a map from his sister by going into the house above Oak's lab, she will gladly give you one. You should now head back to Viridian City, buy a handfull of Pokeballs (see above)(about 5-10 Pokeballs will be enough), buy a few bottles of antidote, and work on, if you already have not, getting your Pokemon up to level 10 and have collected a Pidgey and Rattata (you may have found a Weedle or Caterpie and can keep that too if you wish). You should work to raise ALL your Pokemon at an even level.

      Viridian Forest
This is a place where you should explore deeply (it is enclosed so you can't get lost). You can find many bug Pokemon here.
There are the two caterpillar Pokemon here along with their evolved cocoon forms. It is suggested that you capture the caterpillars and evolve them rather than capturing the caterpillar AND cocoon, then evolving the cocoon and storing the caterpillar. The walkthrough assumes you chose Caterpie. It will cost you more money and time that way.
You can also find some items laying around in Pokeballs. They are a Pokeball, Antidote, and a Potion. In this forest there are many bug trainers here itching to battle you. It is suggested that you battle them all and raise your Pokemon evenly. And yes, if you read the side bar, you found that that famous little electric rodent, the Pikachu, is lurking in the Viridian Forest somewhere. He is difficult to find and may require a little time searching. The most frequent place I found him at was is the 4 or 5 maze-like blocks of grass leading to the exit of the Viridian Forest. You should find a level 3-5 Pikachu around there. You should have a Bulbasaur, Pidgey, Rattata, Butterfree and Pikachu at levels 12-13+ when you leave the forest. If not you should work on them a bit more before challenging Brock, the Pewter City Gym Leader.
